The root cause of disease

Updated: Nov 19, 2023

Root cause of disease

In Ayurveda, we consider a properly functioning digestive system to be the foundation of a healthy and thriving body and mind.

But vice versa, poor digestion is also a fundamental factor in all disorders. When we have poor digestion, all the sensory input that we "consume" won't get digested and metabolized correctly, creating indigestion known in Ayurveda as ama. When this indigestion builds up, it will end up clogging the micro-channels of the body and mind. This doesn't just block the flow of nutrients to the rest of the body. It also restricts the flow of wastes out of the tissues and bloodstream into the digestive tract. Creating a "fertile breeding ground" for disease and infection to take place.

Many bodily signs and symptoms are easily recognized, like constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and so many more. However, many of us have learned to ignore these symptoms simply because life "happens," and we usually don't have time to deal with these symptoms until they develop into a full-blown disease.

Signs of indigestion

Signs of indigestion aren't always as easily recognized in the early stages.

  • A coated tongue when you wake up

  • Unpleasant body odor

  • Bad breath

  • Stiff joints and or muscles

  • Post lunch fatigue

  • Foggy head

These symptoms indicate toxic buildup in the system, blocking the flow of nutrients into the body and waste out of the body.

Healing the root cause

Luckily indigestion is reversible, and creating a robust digestive system will prevent any further formation of ama.

The first things you could do to solve your indigestion are the following:

  • Don't eat raw or (ice) cold foods.

  • Sit down when you eat, chew thoroughly, and do not overeat.

  • Spice your food with spices like turmeric, ginger, mustard seeds, coriander, cumin, etc.

  • Don't eat processed foods, refined sugars, or food that has been frozen.

  • Eat freshly prepared seasonal foods.

  • When you feel overwhelmed by emotions, stop what you are doing, breathe, and let it pass.

  • Find ways to release suppressed emotions (journaling, going for a walk, talking to a friend, etc.)

Once you have got the above covered, your body will start to heal the rest. One step at a time, you will begin to feel better, more energized, and you'll begin to glow as you have never before.

Trust the process, and you're halfway there!
